Locating and Marking Classroom Training

  • 3M offers a two-day comprehensive training class designed to benefit channel, customers and 3M personnel. Workshops are conducted by 3M Technical Service instructors with years of field application experience. These workshops are performed at our Austin, Texas location. Class sizes are limited to ensure a low student-to-instructor ratio, maximizing student participation and understanding.

    There is no charge for attendance at the class, but participants are responsible for their own travel expenses.

    Theory of operation is intermixed with hands-on training to reinforce classroom presentations and discussions. Upon completion of training, each participant receives a 3M Certificate of Completion.

    Day 1 - 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    Instructor: Gary Morris

    Agenda:
     

    • Classroom and Field Training
    • Basic Theory – Understanding the concept of a good locate
    • Dynatel Transmitter set-up / hook ups / functions
    • Direct Connect, Dyna-Coupler and Induction Methods
    • Dynatel Receiver set-up / functions
    • Hands-on field locating using Direct Connect, Dyna-Coupler and Induction Methods
    • Basic Theory - Sheath Faults / Earth Return Faults
    • Hands-on Fault Locating
    • Sonde (Active Duct Probe) Locating

    Day 2 – 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

    • Basic Theory & Operation - Electronic Markers; iD Markers and Passive Markers
    • Dynatel iD Marker Locator set-up / functions
    • iD Marker Templates – PC Tools installation and use
    • iD Markers and GPS integration
    • GPS and GIS Overview
    • 3M Locating & Marking website review of available locating and product help
    • Additional questions, or help, as time permits

    Training Location:
    The 3M Austin Training Facility within the 3M Plant, located at the corner of Research Blvd. (aka, Interstate Hwy 183) and Duval Rd., in Building 1.

    Street Address: 11705 Research Blvd., Austin, TX 78759

    Directions:
     

    • Leave Austin Bergstrom Intnl. Airport going West on Presidential Blvd. – 0.6 miles
    • At the Stop light turn left onto Bastrop Hwy/TX-71 E.
    • Merge onto the highway – 1.2 miles
    • Merge right onto US-183 N. – 16.3 miles
    • Take the Duval Road exit and merge to the right lane. – 0.2 to 0.3 miles
    • At the Stop light turn right.
    • Turn left at the first street.
    • The 3M Austin Plant is on the left side.
    • Turn into the parking lot at the second left turn.
    • Park and proceed to the Building 2 entrance.
    • Security is located near the entrance and they will admit you. Sign-in and obtain your security badge. Your instructor will be contacted when you arrive and will then escort you to Building 1.
